Figures of Mind: Five Works by GJ Gillespie

Showing at the Hurst Library on the Northwest University Campus in Kirkland, WA. July 13 to September 30, 2015.

Farewell Angelia by GJ Gillespie. Collage. 20 x 15. 2015.
This piece is inspired by a dream I had of two clouds. The female figure is a TSA scan.
The title is taken from a Bob Dylan song

Show Me an Angel and I will Paint One by GJ Gillespie.
19.5 x 14.5. Mixed media. 2014.
This work began as an aboriginal design.
I didn't like it, so I created an angel based on classical statues.
The title is a quote from Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), known as the father of realism.

The Gods Themselves by GJ Gillespie. 22 x 17. Collage. 2015.
This piece is on top of a realistic copy of a classical painting of the gods above the Acropolis.
I obscured the figures with tissue then added Zeus casting his thunderbolt

Automat by GJ Gillespie. Collage. 19.5 x 14.5. 2015.
This piece is based on a design by Ian Fairweather.
The title is taken from the Hopper piece by the same name.

On My Mind by GJ Gillespie.
Collage. 38 x 28. 2015.
This piece is inspired by a Suzy Frelinghuysen painting --
which I saw at the De Young Museum in San Fransico.
